The Story

Link's Awakening began as a side project: Nintendo developers worked after hours creating a 'portable Link to the Past.' The result was completely different β€” an intimate, melancholic Zelda set on an island that wasn't what it seemed. Characters inspired by Super Mario (Goombas, Chain Chomps, the Princess) created a dreamlike atmosphere. The Wind Fish, the Ballad of the Wind Fish and the finale β€” discovering that waking the Wind Fish means erasing Koholint and all its inhabitants β€” are among Nintendo's most touching moments. A masterpiece that worked in 4 shades of green.
