The Story

Metroid II sent Samus to SR388 to exterminate every remaining Metroid โ€” a genocidal mission the game made unsettling rather than heroic. The Game Boy's small screen amplified underground cave claustrophobia. Metroids evolved into increasingly terrifying forms: from larva to Gamma, Zeta, Omega, to the Queen. The finale โ€” the baby Metroid bonding with Samus, mistaking her for its mother โ€” became the narrative fulcrum of Super Metroid and the entire saga. The 3DS remake (Samus Returns) modernized gameplay, but the original Game Boy's oppressive atmosphere remains unsurpassed.
