Wipeout XL defined PlayStation's identity more than almost any other game. Anti-gravity futuristic racing with a Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Underworld and Fluke soundtrack: it was the console for clubbers. The Designers Republic graphics were pure avant-garde. Sony placed demo stations in clubs. Gameplay was blazing fast and technical. Wipeout wasn't just a game: it was a cultural manifesto.
