The Story
Shooting Gallery was sold as a separate accessory and included the first 'light gun' in video game history โ a plastic rifle detecting light on the TV screen. The player shot targets (the white square moving on screen) through different overlays: a target range, a shooting gallery, a duck hunt. The technology was the same Nintendo would perfect 13 years later with the NES Zapper and Duck Hunt. Ralph Baer patented the system in 1968 โ four years before the Odyssey's launch. The Odyssey rifle is the great-grandfather of every pointing peripheral ever created, from the Super Scope to the Wii Remote.
