The Story
The Legend of Zelda was the first NES game with an internal battery for saving โ a revolution enabling adventures lasting hours instead of minutes. Miyamoto drew inspiration from his childhood explorations in Kyoto's hills to create Hyrule: an open world where players could go anywhere. Nine dungeons, dozens of secrets, and a sense of mystery the manual deliberately fed with incomplete maps. The gold cartridge gleamed on shelves like a promise of adventure. It defined a genre and franchise that 40 years later still stands at the summit.
