The Story

Metroid created a genre that would bear its name. Planet Zebes was an interconnected maze where every power-up opened new areas: missiles destroyed red doors, bombs revealed secret passages, the Morph Ball allowed rolling through tight tunnels. The atmosphere was oppressive and solitary, far from Mario's playfulness. But the real bombshell was the ending: completing the game quickly, Samus removed her helmet revealing she was a woman โ€” in an era where female protagonists barely existed. A revelation that changed character perception in gaming.
