Defender transformed an everyday action — crossing the street — into a pixelated nightmare. Your frog had to dodge cars, trucks and snakes, then jump onto floating logs and turtles that submerged without warning. Parker Brothers' 2600 version was surprisingly faithful to Konami's arcade. Five traffic lanes, five water lanes, and the timer ticking relentlessly. The 'splat' sound of a run-over frog is one of gaming history's first recognizable sound effects.
