The Story

The Revenge of Shinobi proved what the Mega Drive could truly do. Yuzo Koshiro โ€” just 19 years old โ€” composed a jazz-fusion soundtrack ranking among the 16-bit era's most sophisticated, with the Chinatown theme alone justifying the purchase. But the real legend is in the bosses: Sega included Spider-Man, Batman, Godzilla, Terminator and Rambo without any license. Later revisions changed bosses to avoid lawsuits โ€” Spider-Man alone survived because Marvel granted rights retroactively. Gameplay was precise and punishing: eight shurikens per level, limited ninjutsu, lethal enemies. Each level was an action puzzle where memorization and reflexes had to coexist. A foundational title that defined the Mega Drive's hardcore identity.
