Gunstar Heroes

Gunstar Heroes is Treasure's first game — founded by ex-Konami developers frustrated by creative limits — and remains their masterpiece. The combinable weapon system (4 base types merging into 14 combinations) was genius: fire + homing created a homing fireball, laser + lightning a devastating beam. Bosses were spectacular and absurd: one was a playable board game, another a constantly shape-shifting robot. Action was so intense the Mega Drive suffered slowdowns in chaotic moments — but chaos made everything glorious. In co-op it was the console's most exhilarating experience.
