Golden Axe II

Golden Axe II was the quintessential fantasy beat 'em up on Mega Drive. Ax Battler the barbarian, Tyris Flare the amazon and Gilius Thunderhead the dwarf returned to face Dark Guld in an adventure that faithfully followed the first chapter — perhaps too faithfully. Critics noted it was more expansion than true sequel: same mechanics, same structure, enhanced but not revolutionary magic. Yet co-op remained irresistible. Riding fire-breathing dragons, stealing potions from gnomes by kicking them, and unleashing devastating screen-filling magic was pure arcade fun. For those who never played the first, Golden Axe II was a revelation. For veterans, it was gaming comfort food — familiar, reassuring and thoroughly enjoyable with a friend on the couch.
